Nara

Nara is the birthplace of Japan's civilization, and for this reason, there is an era known as the 'Nara Period'. As the final destinationof the Silk Road, a colourful international culture flourished here in the regin of Emperor Tempyou.
Many historical treasures were made at this time. Nara was unusal in that wild deer were allowed to roam the streets. They were though of as messengers of the gods, and highly prized.
There are many must-see examples of historic architecture in Nara prefecture, such as Horyuji Temple (a world heritage site).
Due to its past as the first permanent capital from 710 to 784, Nara remains full of Japan's oldest and largest temples.
These historical treasures, such as Hōryū-ji a Buddhist temple known as the world’s largest and oldest wooden buildings existing in the world, are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.
The modern Nara, is now much more condensed and is now home to a population of 350,000 residents.
Todaiji Temple, famous for its Great Buddha, and Kasuga Shrine are found in Nara Park, which is located in the center of the city.
The park is home to the Nara deer, which are considered national treasures. Also in the park you can feed these deer shikaenbei, which are discs of food you can buy in the park.
With deer striding through its grounds, the park is a relaxation spot for its public.

- Around the picturesque strees of old Nara, or 'Naramachi' you will see many soft toy red monkeys. These are considered to be a protective charm.
